Yvonne Joyce Craig
Yvonne Joyce Craig (May 16 1937 - August 17 the 17th of August, 2015) was an American actress and ballet dancer popular for her character as Batgirl in the 1960s' television series Batman and as the green-skinned Orion slave girl Marta in the Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Destroy" (1969). The Huffington Post called her "a pioneer of female superheroes" for the television. Yvonne Craig was born in Taylorville, Illinois, and was raised in Columbus, Ohio. Her family moved to Dallas in 1951. She was a student at W. H. Adamson High School, Sunset High School and then W. H. Adamson High School. The only problem was that she did not graduate due to the fact that she didn't have "one PE credit". After being discovered by Alexandra Danilova, a ballerina and teacher, Craig joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo as the youngest member of the corps de ballet. As she performed as Batgirl in the film, her training proved extremely beneficial. In the year 1957, she quit the ballet company "over an issue with changes to casting". She relocated to Los Angeles in hopes of continuing her dance career. However, she soon found herself in film roles. The first time she was seen was in a TV episode of Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover") with Neil Hamilton. Hamilton later was appointed the Batgirl's police commissioner James Gordon. Shortly afterwards, she appeared in three films, including The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story, and Gidget (all 1959)--and as a guest in the TV series Mr. Lucky as Beverly Mills in the episode "Little Miss Wow" (also 1959). Craig was a part of Bing Crosby in High Time (1960) as well as in Seven Women from Hell (1961) which was co-starred with Cesar Romero. In 1962, she was guest on Western Laramie's show "The Long Road Back". Craig also starred with Elvis Presley in the roles of Happened At the World's Fair (1963), and Kissin Cousins (64). In the year 1966, she appeared in Mars Needs Women. In 1967, she played an Russian ballet dancer in In Like Flint.
